What is a Chemical Peel?

A chemical peel is a skin treatment that uses special chemicals to resurface the skin. It works by encouraging the skin to exfoliate and regenerate.

At Advanced Dermatology, Dr. Agha applies a chemical solution to your skin for a therapeutic amount of time and then removes it. The chemical triggers your skin to exfoliate following treatment. When the old skin peels off, the skin that’s exposed is often smoother, more even-toned, and less wrinkled.

Chemical peels are popular for facial skin because they can refresh and revitalize dull, damaged complexions. They can also treat the backs of hands or the neck and décolletage.

What kinds of chemical peels are available?

Chemical peels are a very customizable procedure, with different levels of exfoliation available to treat a variety of cosmetic concerns. Advanced Dermatology offers:

Light chemical peels

Sometimes called lunchtime peels, light peels use a mild acid to gently exfoliate the surface layer of your skin. Dr. Agha uses alpha-hydroxy acid or another mild chemical for light peels.

Light chemical peels are great for people who haven’t tried chemical peels before. They have the power to improve mild skin discoloration and texture while still being gentle. If desired, you can add a light chemical peel treatment to your regular skin care routine.

Medium chemical peels

Medium peels stimulate exfoliation in the top and middle layers of skin. Using glycolic or trichloroacetic acid, Dr. Agha sloughs off dead skin cells to reveal fresh skin beneath.

Medium peels can treat more significant skin imperfections, including fine lines and wrinkles, age and sunspots, acne scars, and moderate skin discoloration.

Deep chemical peels

Deep peels deliver dramatic results for people with moderate lines and wrinkles, age spots, and even some scars. Dr. Agha uses a stronger chemical solution, like trichloroacetic acid or phenol, to penetrate the layers of skin to trigger exfoliation.

In general, a deep chemical peel can be done only once in your lifetime. Dr. Agha can help you determine what type of peel best suits your needs.

What can I expect when I get a chemical peel?

Dr. Agha performs an examination of your skin and talks with you about your goals for treatment before determining if a chemical peel is a good option for you.

For all chemical peels, Dr. Agha begins by cleansing and preparing your skin. For medium or deep peels, he may offer you an oral painkiller or use local anesthesia to keep you comfortable. Light peels typically don’t cause discomfort.

He applies the chemical solution to your skin and lets it work for a specific amount of time. He then neutralizes the acid and washes it gently from your skin.

It’s normal for the treated area to be red following a chemical peel. Redness from a light chemical peel fades in a couple of days, while recovery from medium and deep peels takes longer, a week or more is common. Be sure to follow Dr. Agha’s instructions regarding after-care to ensure your skin heals properly.
