What Is a Mole?

A mole is a growth made of pigment-producing skin cells called melanocytes. Almost everybody has several moles and the majority of moles are harmless. Our dermatologist should monitor your moles at least annually at a checkup to look for signs of skin cancer.

When Do I Need a Mole Removed?

Mole removal is not needed for every mole. The American Academy of Dermatology instructs us to use the "ABCDE"s when examining moles for harmful characteristics. These are:

  • Asymmetrical - when one half of a mole does not match the other half in size, shape, or color, have your dermatologist examine it.
  • Border - if the edges of a mole look irregular, jagged, or poorly defined, show your dermatologist.
  • Color - look for variations in the color of a mole and show your doctor if the mole is not the same color throughout.
  • Diameter - when a mole is greater than 6 millimeters across, your dermatologist should examine it.
  • Evolving. When you notice a mole changing in any way, size, shape, or color, make an appointment.

Our dermatologist can also remove noncancerous moles. If you have a mole that is always rubbing against clothing or is otherwise uncomfortable, talk to our doctor about your options for removal.

How Are Moles Removed?

Our dermatologist can complete a mole removal with a few different methods. Freezing or shaving a mole off is a common method for small moles. Excisions are performed on larger moles and may require sutures and create scarring. MOHS surgery or micrographic surgery removes skin cells one layer at a time to eradicate cancerous cells.
