Microneedling Q & A

What is microneedling?

Microneedling, also called collagen induction therapy, is a minimally invasive treatment to enhance your skin’s appearance. At Advanced Dermatology, Dr. Agha carefully makes tiny, uniform injuries on your skin’s surface with a needling device.

Each injury tells a small corresponding section of the skin to start the process of healing. New collagen fibers grow in your deep layers of skin that make it firmer and smoother. The therapy also results in fewer blemishes and a brighter complexion.

What are the benefits of microneedling?

Microneedling helps minimize many of the most prominent scars and blemishes on your skin without using chemicals, topical products, or lasers. You might benefit from the treatment if you have:

  • Large pores
  • Acne scars
  • Injury-related scars
  • Wrinkles and fine lines
  • Skin laxity
  • Hyperpigmentation or dark spots
  • Stretch marks

You can get microneedling on your face or areas of skin on your body that you often expose to the sun. For more prominent changes to your skin’s quality and texture, you can combine microneedling with platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections or other aesthetic procedures available at Advanced Dermatology.

Does microneedling hurt?

Each person’s pain tolerance is different from the next, so there’s no way to predict the exact sensations you’ll feel on your skin from microneedling. Generally, the needles don’t penetrate your skin deeply enough to cause hard-to-handle discomfort. If you’re worried about the possibility of discomfort, Dr. Agha may offer you a topical numbing cream before he begins.

How long does it take to see results from microneedling?

After a microneedling procedure, you won’t be able to see the full effect on your skin for a couple of weeks while your skin heals itself from within. Because of this innate, gradual process, the results don’t appear overdone or unnatural.

Your skin might appear red and irritated for several days following your procedure, but these side effects typically leave within the first few days. If you don’t like how it looks but don’t want to miss out on school, work, or social events, you may cover it up with makeup. However, you need to protect it from the sun while it heals.
